We all know there are many record labels in the hardcore scene and there may be none more recognizable than the exalted Revelation Records. So, it’s certainly not every day when you see a such established and long running label like Revelation (or any label for that matter) get ready to put out an album by an unknown band that has no releases out and currently has only played one single live show to date. On this day in November of 2015, the name WORLD BE FREE may not be on your radar or on the tip of your tongue, but come early 2016, rest assured, you will know the name and they could very well become one of your favorite new bands. What will no doubt create the hype and bring the buzz to WORLD BE FREE is the pedigree of the band members. Their resumes are indisputable, some may even say impeccable and together they are set to meld many years of hardcore band experience to create something new, something exciting,....even refreshing.

By now you may be wondering, who? what? when? I'm getting to that... settle down. Lineup wise we can start off with east coast to left coast transplant, front man Scott Vogel who many of you probably know as the postulating mastermind who holds the microphone for Terror. Even if you haven't been paying attention, you may have heard of them mostly due to their whirlwind tours that have been bringing them around the globe for many years now. If you've been living under a rock for a decade or two you may recognize some of his older bands such as, Despair, Slugfest and Buried Alive. Take a look over towards guitar and you have the mighty Andrew Kline from the seminal Southern California monster Strife. Strife got their start way back in the early 90’s and are one of the main acts that put Victory Records on the map. After some time away, Andrew and Strife plugged back in again in 2012 and have been tearing it up live and as a result have quickly become big players on the hardcore scene once again. Take a look over on the other guitar and you'll find one of Vogel's old pals from his days in Buffalo… Joe Garlipp. Joe and Scott were bandmates back in the early Buffalo days in the band Despair. Oh,....did I mention that Joe also happens to tour manage this little rock band called The Who? Arthur Smilios is the man holding the bass. Have you ever heard of Gorilla Biscuits? Token Entry? Underdog? or Civ? The answers to that question had better be, yes, yes, yes and yes. Who can argue with that list? Last, but most certainly not least, rounding things out is the true hardcore juggernaut, Sammy Seigler on drums. Sammy is hardcore's Energizer rabbit and like Arthur, has some deep NYHC roots having done time in Youth Of Today, Side By Side, Project X, Judge, Civ, Glassjaw... and the list goes on.
With this stellar lineup in place, World Be Free started to practice back in March of this year. They started working on writing some material, which they did for most of 2015. Subsequently, they ended up going into Hurly Studios in Costa Mesa, CA to lay down some tracks. Following this they headed over to Nick Jett’s (Terror’s drummer) studio to put a little spit and polish on their work and finish it all up. All in all, 16 tracks were recorded with 14 planned to be used on their debut album which will carry the title “The Anti-Circle”. The LP is due out on Revelation Records in February of 2016. So far their lone live show happened on November 14th at the 7th Street Warehouse in Los Angeles.
In response to the question of where the band’s name came from, Sammy replied “World Be Free was inspired by the basketball player Lloyd Free, who legally changed his name in 1981 to World B Free. The world being free is a great concept so we stuck with it.”
And when asked to discuss the musical style the band would be bringing to the table and which direction it may head towards, Sammy added “I think we were all aligned to create something in the vain of the more positive early hardcore we all grew up loving, Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Uniform Choice, Youth Brigade, all that stuff came up. Personally there were elements of the first Warzone 7” that I was inspired by, as well as the Altercation demo. I wanted to try and make an album that you could listen to from beginning to end, minimal filler, similar to how I felt when I got some of those early albums, “Break Down The Walls”, “Sound And Fury” and others. At the end of the day we had to roll up our sleeves and play together a lot to get on the same page, develop a sound, and what ultimately came out is World Be Free.”
Judging by our first taste, the track “World Be Free” which is currently making the rounds online, it seems like Sammy and crew nailed it and are going to accomplish exactly what they set out to do. Get ready. In the meantime you can try to snag a copy of a 2 song promo cassette that was available from RevHQ that looks like it may have been sold out. You know your next click is over to E-Bay, now.... GO!
