Ok, next up we got a nice short and sweet interview with Antonio from Chicago/Kansas City’s SPINE done in full by our man Kattan from Cali back on November 14th. SPINE falls into the “members of” category with some of their members being in bands you probably already know. Make sure to check out their “Time Has Gone” album which came out in September on Bad Teeth Recordings. Take it away Kattan…

IE: When and how did Spine start? I am aware that the members are/were in Weekend Nachos, Sorry Excuse and Harm's Way.

Antonio: It basically started because I was good friends with Jon Hofacker and John Hoffman who were in Harms Way (John is also in Nachos). We did a demo and Hofacker moved to San Francisco so we got a different guy on guitar and added a full time bass slapper in Dil who is in No Class, Keef Mountain, Inner Alter, etc…in Kansas City.

IE: What was the best experience you had while touring? How does someone stay so fit during tours? Like geeez already.

Antonio: I'm biased but I feel like the guys will agree. Last year we had an open date so we left after our Chicago gig to Detroit to hang with my family for a day and a half. It was one of the most relaxing times I've ever had on tour. Even went to a Christmas town in Frankfort.

As far as staying fit… I've never had to deal with that since we aren't on tour that long. With that said, I still do stretches and push-ups, sit ups, and dips when I can…more so to stay loose.

IE: Did any band specifically influence you to be or form Spine?

Antonio: Not necessarily. I just wanted to do a band with my friends in Harms Way/Nachos. Wanted to go after the Infest sound with more emphasis on the youth crew. Infest meets Youth Of Today.

IE: As members of respected hardcore bands, who are extremely passionate about the hardcore and DIY culture, what are your thoughts on Taylor Swift taking down her music from Spotify?

Antonio: That stuff is sort of different for us. I personally don't care. This isn't my career or my livelihood. I just want to have fun and share it with anyone who cares. Taylor's argument is very valid. The record industry is so fucked up at this point. If these artists were smart, they'd take a page out of Pearl Jam’s book and do almost everything themselves. In 2014 it's not that hard anymore, and owning your own rights to your own music makes the most sense. It's still surprising to me that many artists don't own their rights to their own music anymore. It's 2014 people…do people forget that The Beetles lost their rights when Michael Jackson bought them? That's insane. Do it up, do it right, DIY.

IE: What are your current favorite bands?

YOUR FRIEND'S BAND DO NOT COUNT!

Antonio: Protester, Give, Rival Mob, No Tolerance, Innumerable Forms, Step Forward, Genocide Pact, Blindside USA, Keef Mountain, Weekend Nachos.

IE: Does Snyder actually love nachos on the weekends?

Antonio: He's Vegan. So, no.

IE: Assuming that you scream real words in your music, what do you like to talk about in your lyrics?

Antonio: What a jokester? You must really hit it off with your stand up. Real funny man. I'm not John Tardy from Obituary and this isn't Slowly We Rot. Just kidding.

I talk about a bunch of different things. Anything from death in my life (“Hall Of Death”) to pressures from society and life (“Release”) to dealing with the fact that I'm getting older and people are leaving this earth and I'm getting further away from being an actual kid and close to being an adult (“Time Has Gone”). I have trouble reminiscing too much and wishing things were how they were. I think it's normal but it can also be painful. Losing my Mom suddenly in July at 44 really intensified that for me. And of course I've got songs that pertain to being straight edge, although more subtle than anything.

IE: Why did you want to be a vocalist in the first place? Did someone upset you?

Antonio: I can't play an instrument at all. I'd like to learn bass. I've always written… especially poetry and stuff like that so it made sense. I did however write a good portion of a song on the new record on bass haha. (“Swine”)

IE: What was the worst show you have ever played? Or even better, what was the worst fest you ever played?

Antonio: Hmmm, worst show we played has to be when we played in Fresno. But to be fair, it was our first tour so not many people knew who we were. Worst fest has to be every fest haha. I don't really particularly like fests. We've played a bunch and they are cool and a great concept but waiting people don't particular do well waiting an entire day to see bands. So in the past, when we play, it's typically not as energetic because everyone is pretty tired. But to answer your question, worst fest was that Fresno show. There were like 15 bands on it I think.

IE: What was/is the best restaurant you guys have ever eaten at while touring?

Antonio: Damn, I'm not sure. I love hitting the Tea Shop in Boston or this huge pizza place in DC. I personally liked this Poutine I fucked with in Toronto. Pretty sick.

IE: Okay last but not least, what is your favorite soda and why?

Antonio: Pepsi. Everyone loves soda and all the punks do for the most part. But to be honest, and if you think about it, you aren't out of step if you drink Coke. It's the most popular soda in the world. You are basically the most popular jock in high school and if you are a Pepsi drinker, you're that outcast. Ok all jokes aside… most people from the Caribbean drink Pepsi. I love it and to me it's less acidic than Coke and sweeter. Although I'll drink Coke, no problem. I just prefer Pepsi. Although most Coke drinkers are snobs (*Cough* Caution) and won't drink Pepsi. But I'm cool with it.
