Another year is in the books and each year around this time we here at In Effect like to take a look back at the last 12 months to see what transpired in our scene. Much like last year we lost a few good bands along the way, picked up a few good new ones and aside from a few bumps in the road the hardcore music scene is in a good place overall. Thanks as always to the hard working men and women who contribute to this site over and over again. I can't do this alone and your help is valued and appreciated. You know who you are whether you are someone who has contributed a photo or review here or there or others who do a lot more on a consistant basis. This site is run by and for the underground. BANE @ THIS IS HARDCORE FEST, JULY
25, 2015 @ THE ELECTRIC FACTORY, PHILADELPHIA, PA
Big festivals and to a degree package type tours remained strong in 2015. Still the king is the annual This Is Hardcore Fest in Philadelphia which happened over 4 days in late July. This year was installment #10 as yet more bands were checked off Joe Hardcore and crew's bucket list with The Misfits, The Exploited, American Nightmare and Snapcase being the headliners over the 4 days at the Electric Factory. The Saturday show had Bane's TIHC farewell. They have been a mainstay for years at this fest and are on sort of a farewell run as a band with currently no official end date in site. As always Bane left everything they have out there on that stage in what was one of the best sets I saw the entire year. Without a doubt they are one of the best live bands you are going to run into these days and when they do wrap things up at some point in 2016 it will be with them going out at the top of their game. We staged some spontaneous interviews with TIHC 2015 attendees from all over the world out in the parking lot of the Electric Factory and called the article "Voice Of The People” and it was one of the best received articles we had all year. Click on the graphic below to check it out!

Right around the new year NYC's annual Black N Blue Bowl started their lineup announcements. The 2 day event happens each year in May (back at Webster Hall in Manhattan for 2015) and there is always plenty of buzz in the colder winter months about what is to come. Day 1 was headlined by The Regulators who had played one previous show in NYC featuring the Cro-Mags' John Joseph and Mackie Jayson along with Darryl Jennifer and Dr Know from the Bad Brains. Day 1 also had Candiria, Everybody Gets Hurt and Earth Crisis reunions to accompany Turnstile and Madball along with 6 others. Day 2 featured The Rival Mob, Sick Of It All and at first a Crumbsuckers reunion as the headliner but in late February BNB announced a Burn reunion as well to headline Day 2. Pennsylvania’s Wisdom In Chains shined early on and Sick Of It All showed why they are on the top of the heap later on in the day with the Crumbsuckers and Burn finishing off another jam packed successful year for the Black and the Blue. Seattle's Rainfest was on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th at Neumos. This was the 9th year of Rainfest and had Chain Of Strength and Judge as headliners on Friday and Sunday respectively with other big name notables like Turnstile, Code Orange, Expire, and All Out War with tons of other bands coming in from all over the world to play including Japan's Stand United. Chain Of Strength's set had some notable moments with Seattle hardcore old timers from Brotherhood and Undertow joining in on guest vocals during Chain's set.

BIOHAZARD @ IEPERFEST, BELGIUM, AUGUST 15, 2015 PHOTO BY: AGA HAIRESIS
Belgium's Ieperfest rolled on yet again in mid-August. This year's headliners were Judge, Biohazard and Sick Of It All. Ieperfest is unique in that it is both an outdoor and indoor (tents) festival basically held in a cornfield over a 3 day period. Camping out at the festival is something we don't see here in the U.S. but is the norm for this monster festival. The diverse lineup once again mixed in more punk and metal bands to create what looks to be a one of a kind deal as far as festival experiences go. Read this solid writeup by Wrexham star Tim Edwards who always seems to find his way to Belgium in mid-August to consume a brew or two.
Groezrock is another big deal Belgium fest held every year with this year's edition sporting names like Social Distortion, Refused and Pennywise at the top. Bane, Agnostic Front, Turnstile and Comeback Kid were just a taste of the many others who also played. Other notable festivals from Europe included Germany's Mair 1 Fest which unfortunately will not be back in 2016, Slovenia's Punk Rock Holiday held in August over 4 days which also offers camping, and Spain's Resurrection Fest which is a 3 day event in July.
The EMP Persistence Tour backed by M.A.D. Tourbooking again took place as a package tour throughout Europe in mid-January. Sick Of It All, Ignite, Walls Of Jericho, Rykers, Turnstile, and Broken Teeth played 11 dates on this tour. 2016's edition which is again in January has Ignite, Terror, H2O, Twitching Tongues, Iron Reagan, Wisdom In Chains and Risk It! set to go starting January 14th in Berlin.
The Rebellion Tour was another package tour that had Madball, Strife, Backtrack and more touring through Europe from mid-February through March 1st.
SLAPSHOT IN GOES, THE NETHERLANDS, FEBRUARY 8, 2015
Obviously there was more but these are the ones that came to mind first and foremost when we started putting this year end thing together. The last bit of Euro tour info we want to drop here is the secret show that Slapshot helped put on along with the ZLHC scene (Zeeland Hardcore) over in the Netherlands on February 8th. To make a long story short the local club which had hosted the ZLHC shows since 2009 gave the booking guy a heads up that after renovations to their club that there would be no more room for their shows. The plan was to have a Slapshot cover band close out the small club being that Slapshot is Edmond Spelier's (the guy who booked the shows) favorite band. His friends got together and raised money behind his back to bring the real Slapshot over for the final show and the surprise that they put on is one of the funnier and weirdest things your ever gonna see at a hardcore show. Click on the above photo to read the full article written by Bas Spierings along with photos and videos from the show.
NATE FEST @ GAMECHANGER WORLD, HOWELL, NJ MARCH 21ST & 22ND 2015
Nate Fest showed how the hardcore community can come together for a good cause and in this case it was to help Ensign's bass player Nate Gluck who was diagnosed with stomach cancer. On March 21st and 22nd over 20 bands came together to play benefit shows at Gamechanger World in Howell, NJ. The shows and other benefit shows that sprung up helped raise a lot of money for Nate and his medical bills amongst other things to keep him afloat while getting treatments. Just alone the Go Fund Me page created has to date raised over 120K for Nate. With so many fund raisers popping up in recent times within the hardcore scene things can become a blur and at times you may start questioning what is legit and what isn’t but not the case here. We are also happy to point out that Nate appears to be cancer free for a few months now. Read JC Carey’s recap of the NateFest by clicking on the photo of Ensign above.
Other notable happenings in the US and Canada were Richmond, VA's United Blood who put on their 9th edition in March with Judge, Breakdown, Terror, Cold World and Down To Nothing. Tampa's FYA Fest actually snuck in at the tail end of December 2014 on December 27th and 28th with Down To Nothing, Power Trip, Cold World and Incendiary as the bigger names. FYA will happen on Jan 2nd and 3rd for 2016. Breast Fest (Fayetteville, NC, May), Midwest Blood (February) and Not Dead Yet (Toronto, October 22nd-25th) and of course Punk Island which went down with over 100 bands this year on June 21st on the Staten Island Pier in NYC.
VARIOUS SHOW FLYERS FROM 2015
TURNSTILE @ SONS OF HERMANN HALL, DALLAS, TX AUGUST 15, 2015
We roll on with some happenings and what not and how could we not start with Turnstile who literally won 2015. They simply were everywhere starting back in January with the release of their "Nonstop Feeling" album on Reaper Records. The Persistence Tour in Europe with Sick Of It All and Ignite got things rolling, followed by East Coast dates in February, a trip to Japan in March, Europe again in April, Black N Blue Bowl in May, This Is Hardcore Fest in July, the Life And Death Tour throughout the US in August with Bane, Backtrack, Forced Order and more, and Europe yet again in November. They're sound is injecting new ideas and grooves into the template most others have been following for a long time and all I gotta say is we need more bands in the hardcore scene to be influenced by what these dudes are doing as they are changing the game to a degree.
Keep things rolling boys...
3 DECADES AND COUNTING AND AGNOSTIC FRONT STILL GOING STRONG
2015 was a big year as well for Agnostic Front who also gave us new music in the form of "The American Dream Died" back in April on Nuclear Blast and toured on the beaten path throughout the year. An onslaught of album trailers and then actual music videos followed to promote it and if you were anywhere near social media you caught the buzz. Congrats to the living legend Vinnie Stigma who celebrated his 60th birthday in style with an Agnostic Front show at St Vitus in Brooklyn on December 3rd. Catch our "20 Questions With" interview with Stigma by clicking on the photo above and props to his bassist Mike Gallo for making it happen. When I asked Mike if I could email Vinnie some questions he laughed at me and said “Vinnie doesn’t have a computer”… sort of like a “you really don’t know this guy, do you?” Mike also did an interview with us this year covering the new Agnostic Front album and you can check that out by clicking HERE.
MORE 2015 SHOW FLYERS...
Congratulations is also in order to our old friend Jimmy G from Murphy’s Law who turned 50 years old this year. Murphy’s Law played a birthday blowout for Jimmy at the Bowery Electric in Manhattan on August 12th. H2O hit 20 years old as a band this year and also gave us new music in the form of a new album titled "Use Your Voice" which came out in October on Bridge 9.
In early 2015 we were greeted by the release of a great historical piece of work in Tony Rettman's book "NYHC- New York Hardcore 1980-1990". The book features over 100 interviews with the major players in the NYHC scene in that 10 year period and gets some great stories along the way. Two other releases that were more media releases that came out in 2015 were the Billy Club Sandwich "Japan Suspects Tour" DVD and the Indecision documentary titled "What It Once Meant". Both DVD's were looks back and very well put together.
2015 saw Trapped Under Ice start to resurface after their own self imposed hiatus over the last couple of years as things got busy with some of their band members' other bands... notablyTurnstile and Angel Du$t.. They played some West Coast shows, the Back To School Jam in NJ in September and somewhat of a homecoming on October 23rd at the Metro Gallery in Baltimore. They are also apparently writing new material as well.
NYHC old schoolers Urban Waste dropped their "Waste Crew EP" later in the year which was a nice surprise. The band which got started in the early 80's only has their guitarist Johnny Waste left as an original member and he has put together a nice lineup that really killed it at times too. Their show at Sinclairs Bar on Long Island in September may not have gotten a lot of fanfare but was without a doubt one of the best sets I saw of the year with nothing but insane energy coming from each member for their 20 or so minutes that they played.
THE EDDIE LEEWAY SHOW @ THE GRAND VICTORY, BROOKLYN, NY MARCH 21, 2015
Other live highlights that come to mind was the return of Eddie Sutton from Leeway as he put together a band dubbed "The Eddie Leeway Show" that features him alongside some of his musician friends from the hardcore scene. Back in March The Eddie Leeway Show played their first gig at the Grand Victory in Brooklyn and Eddie showed that at the age of 50 you can still be a hardcore kid as they put on a really memorable show. Later in the year they took this show on the road doing more gigs including a short European run.
Other live sets that come to mind from 2015 were Bane's farewell at the Saturday show of This Is Hardcore in Philly as well as Timebomb's set earlier that day. The Black N Blue Bowl had amazing sets all day on Day 2 this year with Wisdom In Chains, The Rival Mob and Sick Of It All.
2015 saw bands like Madball, Biohazard, Bane and others stay very active with touring locally and internationally. If you look back 25 to 30 years, hardcore bands from the US toured the US exclusively. That changed when European promoters started inviting US bands over and now we are at a point where bands from all over the world tour everywhere. US bands in China, Australia, Russia, and South America is no longer something that never happens and in turn more European bands are breaking ground and touring in the US.
BURN 2015. PHOTO BY: JAMMI YORK
Burn was a big name that resurfaced in 2015. They were a late edition as the headliner for Day 2 of the Black N Blue Bowl in NYC and after that things got a little quiet. Later on in the year they did their first ever show in Europe at The Dome in London followed up by a California 3 day run a week later in early October. Writing has started for a new Burn recording which should be one of the more anticipated releases of 2016.
Terror as usual tore things up and released their 7th album "The 25th Hour" along the way in August. As in the past they toured like madmen but had a setback in June when their frontman Scott Vogel had to back out of a month plus tour of Europe due to a back injury. In his place bassist David Wood who also sings for Down To Nothing took over the singing duties. The band then cancelled their spot on the Life and Death Tour which ran across the US in August due to Scott's back issues. Prior to the injury Terror had already done 2 weeks in Europe in March and a US run with The Story So Far which was in May/June. The year was capped off on a better note in Nov/Dec with "The 25th Hour Tour" which had Terror back in full form again touring the US with Code Orange, Take Offense and Malfunction.
Madball made the rounds in 2015, still supporting their "Hardcore Lives" LP from 2014. They played various US dates that saw them hit Texas, California, and Florida along the way as well as a bunch of Europe dates including a few of the big festival shows at home and abroad and even stretched it out to Russia and Belarus at the tail end of April. 2016 should see Madball start the writing process for the follow up to "Hardcore Lives".
2015 saw a few bands break up along the way including Rotting Out, Bring The Fight, Ghost Ship, No Face, On The Offense, Things We Say and Zombie Fight.
2016 already looks to be shaping up for another great run as we see on the horizon new music from Power Trip, Ache, World Be Free, Knuckledust, Point Blank (NY), Manipulate, Society Sucker, Maximum Penalty, Impact (NY), Ignite, Friend Or Foe, Hatebreed and Burn among many others.
OK, they aren’t all albums and there is no order to this list. These are just a few of the releases from 2015 that were sent in that stood out above the rest. Much respect to ALL the bands that sent in stuff for review during the course of the year. We don’t have a paid staff sitting around waiting to review your rehearsal tape that you recorded on your dad’s old tape recorder but we try our best to get as many things reviewed when you take the time to send them in. And to the bands and record labels that still don’t give us respect when we ask for a download to review your precious little release… We don’t need ya! Here are some of the best releases we ran into during the year 2015 whether your ready or not... Click on album covers for samples of each release.
WISDOM IN CHAINS "THE GOD RHYTHM" (Fast Break! Records, June 2015)
Although this is not a top whatever list "The God Rhythm" is the cream of the crop for hardcore releases in 2015. After an almost 3 year gap between albums Wisdom returned with authority in 2015 dropping their most complete effort to date. Solid and diverse song writing backed with one of the best frontmen in the biz is a winning combo that is hard to beat. If they toured more often they would be an absolute hardcore juggernaut. 14 songs, almost 40 minutes run time with NO filler. Long live Wisdom In Chains!
VIOLENT REACTION "MARCHING ON" (Revelation Records, March 2015)
Violent Reaction out of the UK play a sound that fans of bands like Negative Approach, Kill Your Idols, The Abused and 86 Mentality should be able to wrap their heads around rather easilly. Before assembling a proper lineup singer Tom Pimlott was previously the only member of this band making a few recordings with him playing all instruments. Times have definitely changed as Revelation Records saw their potential and scooped them up as their first non US band to put out a full length. Overall 2015 did not see VR tour themselves to death like in previous years but they sure as hell made a big impact with "Marching On".
AGNOSTIC FRONT "THE AMERICAN DREAM DIED" (Nuclear Blast Records, April, 2015)
The first new AF in like 4 years mixed up some familiar styles and sounds from Vinnie Stigma and the boys. The band referred to certain tracks on here as their "Sunday Matinee Sessions". These tracks were throwbacks more in line with their early "United Blood" days and to an extent "Victim In Pain" as well. Other tracks like "Old New York", "Never Walk Alone" and "Just Like Yesterday" showed more of AF's ability to write a nice sing-a-long, more punk rock type track more in line with some of their more recent "hits" like "Gotta Go" and "For My Family". The combination of the two styles keeps "The American Dream Died" fresh throughout and let's not forget the amazing opener simply titled "Intro" that sets this whole thing off. An all around solid LP from this legendary unit that shows no quit.
TURNSTILE "NONSTOP FEELING" (Reaper Records, January 2015)
Turnstile and their "Nonstop Feeling" album were exactly what hardcore music needed in 2015. With many bands churning out photocopies of photocopies when it comes to their sound and style Turnstile came along with a new wind reaching all over the musical spectrum to draw influences. From the first listen this reminded me of "I Against I" era Bad Brains mixed with some pop punk, mixed with some rock n roll and of course some boot to your ass pit stomping hardcore. They are a monster draw for live shows and are right up there with Bane as one of the most photgenic bands ever to come along. Hardcore music will benefit in 2016 and beyond if more bands are influenced by "Nonstop Feeling".
TOO MANY VOICES "SOUTH OF SUNRISE" (July 2015)
Awards that could be bestowed upon this debut full length from Long Island NY's Too Many Voices could be "comeback players of the year" as well as the "breath of fresh air" album. TMV could have packed it in a long time ago with numerous lineup changes and some health issues but after 5 years of being a band finally got their debut full length out there DIY style, recording and putting this out on CD all out of their own pockets. Their melodic take on hardcore is refreshing and reminds me of Dag Nasty at times. Looking for something new that doesn't sound like everything else? "South Of Sunrise" is a good place to start.
DEVIL IN ME "SOUL REBEL" (Impericon, November, 2015)
A late entry that has really grown on me is "Soul Rebel" by Portugal's Devil In Me. The music lives up to the title with great grooves and alot of diversity within their song writing. In many ways they remind me of Madball as well as Wisdom In Chains who they seem to be tight with but still with a sound distinctive enough to call their own. That sound displays many layers to it and it wouldn't be a surprise at all to see DIM "graduate" to tours/fans outside of the realm of hardcore.
YUPPICIDE “REVENGE REGRET REPEAT” (Dead City Records, December 2015)
Another late year end entry that’s stock has been rising dramatically after a few listens. I don’t think Yuppicide has gotten the memo that bands on reunion rides are not supposed to be this productive with this full length album being the follow up to their 2012 EP “American Oblivion”. Retaining 3 of their core members from their heyday has helped keep their style firmly intact. I will go out a little on a limb here and say that they could quite possibly be writing their strongest material to date and with their thought provoking song topics you may even learn a thing or two along the way.
G.L.O.S.S. DEMO 2015 (January 2015)
G.L.O.S.S. which stands for Girls Living Outside Of Society's Shit are a hardline queer/transgender group out of Olympia, WA. This debut demo which is under 10 minutes long is raw as fuck and musically rips. When stripped down G.L.O.S.S. is playing basic hardcore but their passion literally rips through your speakers and everyone I have shown this to has loved it. Overall with their message they have closed themselves off to what they refer to as straight America which is a shame since punk and to a degree hardcore are very accepting of all walks of life. Look 'em up on Bandcamp if you are so inclined.
NIGHT BIRDS "MUTINY AT MUSCLE BEACH" (Fat Wreck-Chords, October 2015)
Before 2015 I have to admit that the name Night Birds wasn't really on my radar. That all changed with the release of this album which had me scurrying for their back catalog. This is their 3rd full length and first one with Fat Wreck-Chords. Much like a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich these NJ dudes mix two great things together showing both strong punk rock roots as well as their love for hardcore music to create this frenzied amazing sound that sucked me in from the first listen.
UNION OF FAITH "DEMO 2015" (October 2015)
A nice surprise here although only 5 songs is the Union Of Faith demo. Features ex-members of The First Step and Champion among others as well. These tracks shine with a posi-type sound that has been beaten to death over the years but UOF bring intangibles to the table that somehow DON'T make these songs sound like every other band doing this style. Where they go from here could be a good question to raise with members spread out between the east and west coasts.
MORE 2015 RELEASES THAT WE LIKED!
CLICK ON IMAGES TO WATCH EACH VIDEO
NIGHT BIRDS "MUTINY AT MUSCLE BEACH"
The story behind this twisted video is a few years back the Night Birds allowed their track “New Cults” to be used in the horror flick “Call Girl of Cthulhu”. In exchange for this they got the guy to promise them to do a music video for them at some point and this is the end result. The video was shot in a barn in Maryland and took a day to finish. The band finds themselves tied up to chairs while a sick stalker/fan kills them off one by one using their tools of their trade to off each of them. Their drummer gets it first with a drumstick through the head, another guy gets strangled with guitar strings and lead singer Brian gets his mic shoved down his throat till there is blood gushing out of his mouth and he keels over. The footage flips back and forth from the band performing the track to them being tied in the chairs meeting their fates. Is the whole premise a little morbid and out there? Fuck yeah but so is every horror film you’ve ever seen and obviously the direction this video took. Probably not the video you want to pull up on your phone at the dinner table but everywhere else is OK.
AGNOSTIC FRONT "OLD NEW YORK"
You gotta love how this video was put together with the band and a gang of friends jumping on the 6 train in the Bronx on a Friday morning in April and filming this guerilla style with no permits or anything. A social media post was your invite and imagine being a passenger on this train when 25 or so tatted up crazies get on at Zerega Avenue and start busting out this track with people filming them! Video footage of old New York from the 1970’s and 1980’s is spliced in to show a slice of life that simply doesn’t exist here anymore… which is the whole point of the songs message. A great concept that was pulled off very well.
COMEBACK KID "LOSING SLEEP"
CBK’s “Losing Sleep” video does not break any new ground as we have all seen hardcore videos with a band performing their track live but the sheer quality of this is what brings this video together. We get a mix of studio footage of the band which is filmed in black and white mixed in with amazing full color live footage of CBK performing this absolutely crushing track in front of a big crowd. Devil In Me’s lead singer Poli appears in the studio footage of this and adds another layer to a simple but very fun to watch video.
H2O "SKATE"
Just under 2 minutes but a nicely put together video for one of the better songs off of the new H2O album “Use Your Voice”. Things start off with footage of a young Toby Morse doing some skate moves back in Maryland before the music kicks in. Once it does there is a mix of the band performing the track at various locations including Hurley HQ and Vans Skate Park in Southern California. Making a pretty cool cameo is Steve Caballero who at 50 plus years of age can probably skate circles around your average punk rocker. In 1999 Steve was named “Skater Of The Century’ by Thrasher Magazine which is like 100 years and shit so if you are making a video about skating for a song called “Skate” why not get a living legend to skate around while playing a guitar. Make sure to check out his band The Faction as well. Good song with a good vibe all around.

IN EFFECT FEATURES YOU MAY HAVE MISSED FROM 2015
That’s it! See you in 2016 where we hope to crack a million visits to In Effect Hardcore. If you are a new visitor here… welcome aboard. In Effect started as a fanzine in 1988 and the early issues were put together using this thing called a typewriter. The first issue had 50 copies printed and as the years went on the circulation rose as we kept plugging away. Issue #12 was the last print issue and we printed up 10,000 copies. 99.9% of them were sold out of the trunk of my car, at shows and by using some pretty creative pre-internet methods via trades. To have the potential to reach 1 million people when a decade plus of print zines may have reached 20,000 people to me is insane and we thank you for your support. To find out more about In Effect’s history click on our “ABOUT” page. Check out our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages for various updates that don’t always make it on to the main site. We have In Effect Hardcore t-shirts as well as stickers available with the machine gun granny logo. Postage rates are tricky and we don’t keep a ton shirts in stock so if you are interested we ask you email us at: InEffectHC@aol.com and we can tell you what sizes we have in particular colors.
