HARDCORE 2013... WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?!?
It has been almost 2 years now since In Effect rose from the fanzine graveyard and came back as a FrankenZombie like website and 2013 was a pretty damn good year for hardcore music in general. Any year you don’t have ex band members showing up at their old bands’ shows trying to stab the current members is a good year… right?
This was originally going to be a year end list type of deal much like last years “Best Of” edition on this site but I decided to kind of “review 2013” and go over some of the positives that the last 12 months has given the world of hardcore music. Although this information is still pretty fresh in all of our minds I am writing this more with an eye on the future and "looking back" at this piece down the road. Kind of like an "In Effect Time Capsule".
Where do we even start, right? The lifesblood of hardcore music is the live show. You can put out all the great music in the world but without the venues and the people showing up to witness it what do you really got? Some bands practically live on the road and to them we tip our hats and ask… how do you do it over and over?
In a case of if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it there was a steady flow of US bands who headed over to Europe for tours which has been the case for a good 2 decades plus now. It is probably more likely that you can catch NYHC icons Sick Of It All or Agnostic Front on tour during the summer in Europe than you can in NYC. Bands like Terror, Expire, Rotting Out, Strife, Vice, Madball, Backtrack, H2O, Take Offense, Rude Awakening, Bane and a ton of others made the rounds either in Europe or in the US and in some cases to Australia and even South East Asian countries like The Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Hello Japan, are you still out there?
This past July we interviewed Jai from the band Overthrown from Singapore. Jai also runs Reconstrux Bookings who has been instrumental in opening the door for western bands to navigate through countries that you may have never known had hardcore scenes. Youth Of Today played the Bound By Honor Fest in Singapore this past July and prior to that Backtrack visited as well as Dutch bands All For Nothing and No Turning Back. In turn Jai’s band Overthrown played their second European tour in late July into August.

In my neck of the woods of NYC/Long Island some bands may not have gone tour happy but still put in some major work playing a lot of local shows. Bands like Abject!, Live Fast Die Fast, On The Offense, Zombie Fight, The Last Stand, Straphangers, and the forever young Urban Waste played the balls out of the local scene here and were fixtures on shows throughout the city and Long Island.
Brooklyn and Queens have almost become the new Manhattan with shows popping up all over at small bars/clubs like St. Vitus, 285 Kent, The Trash Bar, The Music Hall Of Wiliamsburg, and The Grand Victory in Brooklyn and The Hilltap in Queens among others. If you are going to a show on Long Island chances are you will be visiting West Babylon (Sinclair’s) Amityville (Revolution & Amityville Music Hall) or Sayville (Sayville Republican Club). If you are old, crusty and closed minded then block out this last paragraph cause nothing is ever going to match CBGB’s, The Wetlands or Coney Island High but it should be noted that NY and the surrounding area that makes up the Tri-State area has a shit load of bands and are still making noise. The notion that NYHC in 2013 is Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and the Cro-Mags ONLY is off base as there is not only a wave of bands on the way up but also plenty of new faces to go see them from what I have seen.
In addition to tours and local shows at small bars and clubs how can we forget about the seemingly never ending “FESTS”. There is a fest for everything these days and if you can get 5 or more bands to play your basement on a Friday night then you too can have your own fest. The one I look forward to the most and the one that probably has the most street cred is Philly’s own This Is Hardcore which had its 8th edition this past August over a 4 day period. It is hard to please everyone but it seems like everything Joe Hardcore and crew do is to please the customer sorta speak. They have this huge venue with the Electric Factory with a parking lot set up with every kind of food truck you can imagine plus vendor tables out the ass. If you like gluten free deep fried avocados with vegan dipping sauces they probably got a food truck to accommodate you. There is a phone app to tell you set times and general info on the bands, a Bandcamp page giving sample songs for the bands that you may not be familiar with, a pizza party during one of the bands sets, armored combat exhibitions, and oh yeah… sets by over 50 bands including Kid Dynamite, Blacklisted, 7 Seconds, All Out War, Killing Time, Wisdom In Chains, Turnstile, Paint It Black, Negative Approach and obviously a whole lot more. If you haven’t gotten to one of these yet make sure you do in 2014 and keep in mind the change from August to July with scheduled dates running between July 24th through the 27th in 2014.
Close behind This Is Hardcore is the Black ‘N Blue or BNB Bowl which is NYC’s premier event of the year. This year the BNB crew got NYHC icons Judge out of retirement and ticket demand was so high early on that they added a second day/show where they ended up getting Long Island’s Kill Your Idols to come out of retirement as well. The BNB Bowl is held each year at Webster Hall which used to be called The Ritz back in the day and the connection to the old era brings back a lot of memories especially of mixed bills with metal bands like Slayer playing with the biggest names in hardcore at the time. On top of having Judge play on both days of the BNB Bowl this year other acts included Breakdown, Madball, Bane, Black Train Jack, Strife, District 9, Take Offense, Indecision, Altercation and more totaling over 20 bands from today and yesterday. To have the ability to cram as many people as they did into Webster Hall for 2 days back to back is a huge deal in terms of the direction and future as there weren’t just old folks showing up to these shows to see the older bands.
These two events in Philadelphia and NYC were just two that I attended but throughout the US and Europe there are others and many of them as well. The US also had Chaos In Tejas (May/June, Austin, TX), Destroy LA (July, Los Angeles), East Coast Tsunami (September, Reading, PA), Fun Fun Fun Fest (November, Austin, TX), Gateway To The West (October, St. Louis, MO), So-Cal Slam (April, Camarillo, CA), Damaged City Fest (April, Washington DC), The Rumble (April, Chicago, IL), One Voice Fest (October, Woodland, CA), United Blood (March, Richmond, VA) and a bunch more as well.
Unfortunately 2013 saw the Sound & Fury Festival end as the promoters pulled the plug on this So-Cal (Santa Barbara) fest a couple of months before its July dates with an online letter explaining (in part) the huge financial risks they had to take and who could blame them for not wanting to potentially lose thousands of dollars? Read the letter here: http://www.soundandfuryfest.com
Before we leave the US I have to mention Punk Island 2013 which was held in late June on Staten Island at Pier 1 next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Imagine 90 plus punk and hardcore bands playing on a pier all day with the Statue Of Liberty off in the distance. The 7 stages that they used to accommodate the 90 plus bands were merely sections of the pier and adjoining park and were spaced perfectly so the noise from one band wouldn’t bleed into the other bands playing. Watching The Last Stand literally take over a small section of the park for their set as well as Antidote playing their classics as night fell were instant classics. The fact that I knew maybe 5-10 of the 90 bands on the bill didn’t matter as it was more about taking a ride out to Shaolin and catching some live music and getting a taste of some of that crusty ass punk shit as well.
Europe never gets short changed with what seems like an endless supply of fests AND tours… many that run yearly during the summer months but there always seems to be something going on at any time of the year. One of the more notable ones is IeperFest which is held in the middle of a Belgian cornfield in August (as well as having a winter edition in March). This year’s summer edition of Ieper featured Black Flag, Madball, the Cro-Mags, No Turning Back, Integrity, Death Before Dishonor, DYS, Devil In Me, The Setup and more.
M.A.D. Tourbooking’s "The Persistence Tour" 2013 ran from January 10th through the 20th hitting major European cities boasting a lineup of Hatebreed, Agnostic Front, H2O, Stick To Your Guns, Neaera, and The Acacia Strain. The Rebellion Tour in its 4th installment also was a moving active tour much like Persistence running through major European cities but in March and featured Madball, Terror, Comeback Kid, Your Demise, AYS, and The Setup. Other notables included the Mair 1 Fest in June in Germany which featured Sick Of It All, H2O, Boy Sets Fire, Terror, Alpha & Omega, NOFX, and a lot more as well as London’s NinjaFest which made its return after a few years off and was headlined both nights by One Life Crew.
Lets not forget Canada who had HeartFest in Gatineau, Quebec in May as well as Not Dead Yet in Toronto this past November.
As previously mentioned Judge made a comeback in a huge way in 2013 kicked off by the 2 BNB Bowl shows and then followed up at This is Hardcore Fest as well. Later in the year Judge made trips out to Texas, and California as well as over to Europe for a few shows as well sending hints at possible new recordings as told to us by frontman Mike Judge in this June interview. (Click link below). A return to Europe is in the works in 2014 with at least 3 confirmed dates starting on April 30th. Check the FLYERS page for dates and cities.

Kill Your Idols also dusted off their amps and made the rounds at the BNB Bowl as well as This Is Hardcore and 2 shows in one day in Chicago before wrapping things up at Santos Party House in NYC on November 29th and 30th which were billed as the bands “Last US shows ever”. With unset plans for a possible run over to Europe could we have seen the very last of the mighty KYI? Andy from Kill Your Idols gave us some pretty detailed information on the band’s plans in this March interview we did leading up to their BNB Bowl performance.

Trapped Under Ice made a big splash announcing in the early summer that the band would be taking an extended hiatus that would not see them around until at least 2015. Their last show was at This Is Hardcore but in the meantime this hiatus has kind of helped spring board TUI members’ other bands Turnstile (Brendan), Angel Du$t (Justice) and Down To Nothing (Jared) as all 3 bands have made major contributions in 2013 either on tour or via recorded material. Check out what TUI bassist Jared had to offer on the hiatus and more in this September interview:

After a few years away from the game Iowa’s Modern Life Is War jumped back in feet first with an appearance at This Is Hardcore followed shortly afterwards by the releases of a brand new 11 song album titled “Fever Hunting” on Deathwish Records. To watch bands reform and then drag their feet around for months or even years rehashing the same old songs from “back in the day” gets boring quick so for Modern Life Is War to come back and have a full length with all of their old members right away was really a breath of fresh air and what a solid record to top it off.
2013 saw Revelation Records make a run at putting out good hardcore music again by releasing two solid albums in The Rival Mob’s (MA) “Mob Justice” and Down To Nothing’s (VA) “Life On The James” albums as well as signing Southern California’s Soul Search who should have their debut LP out in early 2014.
The BNB Radio Takeover Show is still going strong since 2009 airing every Tuesday night from 8pm to 10pm (EST) at www.evr.com playing a wide range of hardcore and punk music as well as having plenty of in studio guests from touring and local bands.
The Sixth Borough Radio Show is run by NJ transplant Brian Macko who now lives in Southern Florida and runs frequent shows via their website. All in all they update pretty frequently and currently have over 60 episodes which are all archived and available to listen to 24/7. http://www.6boroshow.com
2013 saw Ken Kelleher start up “Pissed Off Radio”… a hardcore and punk show that airs online via their http://www.pissedoffradio.com website (usually on Wednesdays). You may remember Ken from his 1990’s stints on WSOU’s “Hardcore Reality” and “Street Patrol” radio shows while he attended NJ’s Seton Hall University. Their website now has 14 previous episodes posted and asks for band submissions so send in your band’s music.
So as shown in the last couple of paragraphs with these alternatives to public radio the internet can have a positive effect on the hardcore music scene. These shows can pretty much say and play what they want without restrictions. Someone living in Europe, Asia, Africa or Mars for that matter can listen live to a show happening in NYC and connect with the producers of the show via social media while it is happening provided that they have an internet connection. Pretty cool stuff.
On the other side of things 2013 showed the continued resurgence of the old style printed zine. You know… the old cut and paste style made by hand in someone’s house. Websites can get the information out to people fast but there is nothing like holding/reading a good old fashioned DIY zine. I picked up a few this past year including my favorite called #Hashtag Hardcore out of the Netherlands which is overflowing with opinions on everything.
Others that I picked up at shows or by mail were Handmade from PA, Isolated from Ohio, Screamin’ Zine from NY (which actually came out in 2012 but I didn’t find it until March. Printed zines have a charm about them, they are not perfect but neither is hardcore music… either you “get it” or you think they are dumb. You often stumble upon them unexpectedly like you are at a show and there is something pushed off to the side near the bands t-shirts… kind of forgotten by most but for the real zine fanatic your eye gets drawn to it for some reason or another. Zines had enough of an impact that Eric Weiss of Rumpshaker Zine set up a table at the This Is Hardcore Festival selling only zines!
Besides zines 2013 brought us other creative works in the form of photographs in Aga Hairesis’ “In Her Eyes" calendar which started with a 2013 calendar showing off her amazing live shots from 2012 shows and now with her second installment which features 2013 photos in her 2014 calendar. Lewis Dimmick (formerly of Our Gang fame) released his book called “This Music” which has personal looks back at his time growing up in NYC and going to hardcore, punk and metal shows. Both Aga and Lew are frequent contributors to this site and both of these releases mirror the quality that they share with this site so often.
We also can’t forget the passing of Onno "Cro-Mag" who passed away in late February at the age of 49. Onno was from The Netherlands and although I never met the guy I had heard about him as being a real character and was looked upon as a good friend by touring bands that came through his neck of the woods. Onno started Strength Records in 2012 with Roger Miret Of Agnostic Front and the label still carries on. RIP Onno.
2013 brought us a bunch of new bands that had their first releases come out during the past 12 months. Some notables include Manipulate (NY), Inner Self (Brazil), Puig Destroyer (US), Weird And Pissed Off (NY), On The Loose (NY), Done Dying (CA), Vexed (NY), High Card (NY), No Dice (NY), and Pantah from The Netherlands.
So 2013 is on the way out and 2014 already has a shit load of releases to look forward to. New releases are in the works and should be arriving soon from bands like Sheer Terror, All For Nothing, H2O, Expire, Modern Pain, Zero Progress, Backtrack, Too Many Voices, Caught In A Trap, Soul Search, Abject!, and obviously many more as the year goes along. Look for a new book “No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes” in early January which will cover the long defunct/infamous City Gardens club in Trenton NJ as well as a separate documentary titled “Riot On The Dance Floor” (also covering City Gardens) which hopefully will be available to the public in early 2014. Other in the works things which we may or may not see in 2014 are documentaries covering hardcore music from Pennsylvania, Long Island and Staten Island. PEACE OUT 2013!
IN ORDER... a breakdown on what In Effect feels were the best releases we received in 2013.
1: DOWN TO NOTHING “LIFE ON THE JAMES” (Revelation Records)
Top of the heap, A NUMBER1… DTN’s “Life On The James” is heavy, catchy, and infectious with some of the most solidly written songs of the year both musically and lyrically. This album ruled my music listening world throughout 2013 and I am not alone as they seem to be one of those bands that most people connected to hardcore and punk can get into.
BEST TRACKS: "WHEN I REST I RUST", "NO LEASH", "DIRTY SOUTH", "LIFE ON THE JAMES"
2: ROTTING OUT "THE WRONG WAY" (6131 Records)
Rotting Out’s “The Wrong Way” comes in a very close second and proves that their debut full length from 2011 was no fluke. One of the hardest working bands on the scene today delivers real straight up hardcore that can stand toe to toe with almost any of the big names of today or back in the day. Diverse songwriting mixed with thoughtful lyrics makes these guys the real deal.
BEST TRACKS: “THE WRONG WAY”, “A QUESTION”, “ROOTS AND WILL”
3: STIGMA "FOR LOVE & GLORY" (Durty Mick Records)
Vinnie Stigma who is often referred to as “The Godfather of NYHC” has his own band and their 2013 offering was an amazing blend of catchy Rancid-like punk rock mixed with some good old fashioned hardcore making for an amazing listen. Those expecting Agnostic Front minus Roger will be greatly disappointed but those looking for some incredibly catchy songs with great hooks and sing-a-longs will love this from start to finish. “Don’t Lose Faith” is my pick for best song of 2013.
BEST TRACKS: “DON’T LOSE FAITH”, “AVERAGE MAN”, “BATTLE”
4: WORLD EATER "WORMFEAST" (Beatdown Hardwear Records)
Germany in die haus! World Eater play this blistering fast style of hardcore that reminds me a lot of AF era “Victim In Pain” with a modern twist and a flawless production. Most of the 14 songs here are under 2 minutes long and yet they keep things moving along and fresh with some nice guitar work and some seriously sick breakdowns throughout.
BEST TRACKS: “CALLING YOU OUT”, “BURIED CONVICTIONS”, “SHADOWS”
5: TAKE OFFENSE "UNITED STATES OF MIND" (Reaper Records)
Another young Cali band on the rise and this is their follow up to last year’s 4 song EP which took the top spot on this list. Take Offense shows growth on this effort adding in some nice melodic hooks and lead in’s on some tracks while retaining their hard edge along the way.
BEST TRACKS: “PLACE YOUR BET”, “WITHOUT YOU”, “WHEN DEATH COMES NEAR”
6: THE RIVAL MOB: "MOB JUSTICE" (Revelation Records)
Love this band and how they go about their business kind of flying under the radar at times with not a lot of touring and no social media sites to speak of. “Mob Justice” is 12 songs of raw straight up hardcore that would have made any 1980’s CBGB matinee lose their mind. The “Mob Justice” promo cassette that came out last year had 5 of the best tracks from this album and takes a little steam out of this but still a rager all the way through.
BEST TRACKS: “INTRO GRUNT”, “MOB JUSTICE”, “BOOT PARTY”
7: THE SETUP "THIS THING OF OURS" (Beatdown Hardwear Records)
Belgium’s The Setup play a more 90’s style of rougher hardcore but the catch is they throw in a ton of hooks and catchy choruses to give them their own identity. The first 4 songs on this album when played in a block is 10 minutes of hardcore that is hard to match anywhere. The remaining 7 tracks on “This Thing Of Ours” shows the bands song writing skills and why they deserve to be on this list.
BEST TRACKS: “BLACK HEARTS”, “WALKING BLIND”, “BURN”
8: POWER TRIP "MANIFEST DECIMATION" (Southern Lord Records)
1980’s style thrash crashes this list as Texas’ Power Trip take a style of music that I grew up on and revive it in an amazing way in 2013 with this 8 song monster. Light speed tempos backed with buzz saw like guitars and the right vocal approach prove that metal when done right is hard to fuck with.
BEST TRACKS: “MANIFEST DECIMATION”, “HERETIC’S FORK”, “THE HAMMER OF DOUBT”
9: MODERN LIFE IS WAR "FEVER HUNTING" (Deathwish Inc.)
A great change of pace album when you are looking for something a little different. “Fever Hunting” to me is so friggin’ well put together and well thought out with tempo changes, melodic hooks, and just an overall feeling of originality all the while keeping that hardcore feel. Comeback band of the year based largely on how they went about their comeback and the timing of the release of this album.
BEST TRACKS: “HEALTH, WEALTH, AND PEACE”, “MEDIA CUNT”, “FEVER HUNTING”
10: LIVE FAST DIE FAST "KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED" (Full Circle Attack Records)
A sleeper pick that squeezes into the 10 spot behind 9 solid songs of good old fashioned NYHC filled with tons of heart and obvious passion for the hardcore lifestyle. Why these guys are not getting more recognition is a little baffling but also serves as a reminder that the bands we all know and love today were all new and climbing the ladder at some point.
BEST TRACKS: “THE DEFINITION”, “BROTHERS UNITED”, “HORROR STORIES”
BEST VIDEOS 2013
YUPPICIDE "AMERICAN OBLIVION"
This video and its uniqueness come as no surprise as that’s what I have come to expect over the years from this group of 40-somethings who met in art school back in the day. The lyrics and message of “American Oblivion” come to life via this well produced video that entertains as well as gets their message across. With an overall lack of concept videos coming out of the hardcore music scene leave it to Yuppicide to come up with something as original and as well put together as this.
DOWN TO NOTHING "LIFE ON THE JAMES"
Let’s get the band together on a boat, play our instruments ON the James River, jump around a bunch and make a video out of it. AWESOME idea for a great song which is now immortalized as a great video. Will always wonder now if the guitars they jumped into the water with had problems with them already or did they use their good ones? Honorable mention as well to Down To Nothing for their “No Leash” video which was a live footage video filmed in the UK and put together amazingly well.
STIGMA "DON'T LOSE FAITH"
Stigma and Raised Fist Propaganda take a great song and turn it into a great video showing the destruction that Hurricane Sandy delivered to parts of NYC and Long Island in late 2012. A good mix of the band performing the song in studio as well as Stigma and bass player Mike Gallo walking around completely destroyed neighborhoods still makes the hair on my neck stand up as this hits close to home for myself and I am sure other people that were in the path of this storm.
THE IN EFFECT 2013 MIXTAPE
In no particular order here are some of the best songs of 2013

THANK YOU!
This site takes a lot of fucking work to put together and there are countless hours I could be wasting on my couch instead of doing this but I would much rather be doing In Effect. It is NOT a 1 man operation by any means but rather an organized chaos where people from all sorts of backgrounds chip in one way or another to make each feature or gallery or section look or read better. I consider myself very fortunate to have met many of the people who have contributed to this site, some of whom I talk to on a daily basis via Facebook, text messages, or on the phone… some have stayed at my house while visiting from other states and countries.
One guy who deserves a ton of credit is Bas Spierings who basically gets shit done for In Effect. He does all of this sites’ graphics work and takes a lot of photos at shows and in general helps spread the word. In short, if you see this man at a show in Europe please buy him a beer because he deserves one. Bas is a very important part of In Effect but I must give thanks to the entire collective of folks who do so with nothing more than a mention and a thank you. So thank you for all your help in 2013 to all my friends here as well as anyone who has supported this site from its start in 2012 and to all those who go back to the printed fanzine days of 1988 with me.
Aga Hairesis, Matt Gill, Lew Dimmick, Gray Muncy, Steven Michael Ruud, SPINA NATION, Paul Imburgia, Wass Photography, Ken Penn, PHECK, John Franko, Joseph Carey, AliXPope, Matty Abject!, Tim Edwards, Kate Frese, Max Watt, Brett Beach, Carl Gunhouse, Craw, NY 5TH GEN.COM, Samma Jamma, Daniel Parsons, Jammi Sloan York, Jeff “Stress” Davis, Izzy Borden, Brian 6th Borough Macko, Frankentooth, Freddy Alva, Chun Guo, Scoot Horton, Mike Mahoney, BNB Radio Takeover Crew, TIHC Crew Joe, Chris, and Sunny, and all the bands that repost and spread the word about this site, all the kids in the US and abroad that hand out stickers and flyers and everyone who reads this site and feels a little smarter (or dumber) after you do so.
