Back for another go around is Bronx born District 9. Straight outta the mid-90’s NYHC scene they took venues like The Wetlands and Coney Island High by storm and put an explanation point on their existence with their appearance in the Velebit Productions NYHC Documentary. Band member changes, long breaks between appearances, re-unions… The somewhat typical evolution of many of their fellow hardcore brothers’ bands was to follow until they dropped “SouthBronxMemoirs” a few weeks back… a 4 song refresher course featuring redone and previously unrecorded jams. Back in the saddle once again we caught up with current guitarist Lenny Bednarz who also used to hold it down in the highly underrated Fahrenheit 451. The current lineup consists of OG members Myke Rivera (vocals), Cez Ramirez (guitar), Todd Hamilton (bass) and long time contributors Lou Medina (drums) and Lenny on guitar. IE: D9 just put out the “South Bronx Memoirs” EP. Who or what was the spark that got the ball rolling with getting D9 back for another go-around? What were the circumstances surrounding everything?

Lenny: I guess you can say, we got back together to play This Is Hardcore in 2011. So you could blame Joe Hardcore for this one. Haha. The last time that we had played together was 2007. To be honest with you, I had no Idea if and when it would happen again. Then Myke picked the guys and we got calls and it was on once again. Shortly after This Is Hardcore we talked and the opportunity came up to record. So we headed into the studio with Len Carmichael at the controls.

IE: It is currently out only as a digital download on ITunes and a few other download places. The vinyl versions will be coming out in March. Why is there such a big gap between the digital and the vinyl?

Lenny: We could have pushed the release back until the vinyl was ready but we said fuck it lets get this out.

IE: Seems like vinyl is always sold these days with color vinyl and limited editions. Will this be the case with “South Bronx Memoirs”?

Lenny: There is going to be a 100 limited hand numbered clear blood splattered vinyl and a limited black vinyl that will be available. At this time I am not 100% sure as to the total count on that. Check out DignifiedBastard.com for more details.

IE: To clarify a little bit… these are all kind of redone songs or in the case of “The Letter” an old track that never was recorded. Can you go down the tracklist of “South Bronx Memoirs” and tell us how each song got picked to be on this?

Lenny: "The Letter" - Is the newest old song that we have. It was something that Cez, Todd, and Myke put together a while back but it was never really recorded because it went through many changes and we never really had an opportunity to lay the track down. We knew that this was going to be the lead off song because it was so strong.

"Fool" - The original recording of "Fool" was on the "It's All Good Comp" on SFT back in '95. To be honest it was just a live track from the "SchoolAHardKnox" sessions and this time we wanted to give it a proper recording that it deserved. Danny NorthSide Kings guests on this track.

"Think About It" - This was a last minute change to be honest. But we are truly happy to lay this one down as well. It really shows what this line up is about.

"Victim" - This one has been begging to be recorded since it was written. It was a shame that it never really was until now.

IE: And the question that I am sure you will probably be asked a lot. Why not put out new material instead of re-working old stuff?

Lenny: We wanted to give the old material the recording that we all felt it deserved. We are all a lot older and wiser when it comes to playing now and we felt what was missing back then could be fixed now. We wanted to make these songs heard. As far as, “The Letter”, “Fool”, and “Victim” we have been wanting to record these forever but nothing really ever came up. Honestly, we didn't have anything new and we were just like, "fuck it, lets record" cause if we didn't it would probably never of happened.

IE: Logistically the band is spread out with Myke in Colorado, Todd in Arizona and everyone else back in NY. What are the bands plans moving forward in regards to writing new songs and future recordings?

Lenny: As a band we are working on new material for this year. I guess since this new EP came out it has lit a fire under our asses to get back in the studio and record. I really hope we can get enough songs written to do a full length but it's all a work in progress. As for Myke and Todd.. That's why we have the internet. It's amazing what you can do these days.

IE: What about future shows, anything in the works right now?

Lenny: We have a show set up in the upcoming months it will be announced at some point. Stay tuned.

IE: With key members living so far apart what would you say are realistic expectations for District 9 in the next year or so?

Lenny: Well, hopefully a full length and play out a little more. We'd like to hit up Japan at some point. But just like everything else, it's gotta be at the right place and at the right time.

IE: Back in 2008 D9 put out “Addicts” on the “Music For People Like Us” comp. which is one of my favorite D9 tracks. What’s the back story with that song? Wasn't it originally recorded for a different comp?

Lenny: It was originally released on the “Brotherhood Of The Anti – Good” Comp back in like '98 - '99 That was with Al on Drums, Todd on Bass, Cez on Guitar and Myke. We were offered the comp slot for the "Awake/Strong" Comp and Myke wanted to do the song again with Armando (Fahrenheit 451) trading off vocals. So that is the song that we did.

IE: It seems like new tracks don’t come around too often but when they do you drop some high end quality stuff. Are there new tracks being worked on and if so can you tell us a little about them?

Lenny: We have some stuff as of right now but still compiling and writing.

"Schoolahardknox" EP 1995

IE: I wanted to run down the other bands your current members are in. Start off with Well Excuse Me Princess.

Lenny: It's a fun pop punk band with a girl singer. Comprised of Jess Goldey (My Turn To Win / Lets Die ) on vocals, Pete LaRussa (No Redeeming Social Value/D9/Dominican Day Parade/Spacebeard) on drums, Me (D9/Fahrenheit 451/Dominican Day Parade) on guitar and we currently just got two new members Phil Bryer (Always The Victim / The Twilight Collective) on guitar and Shaun Milkes (Passion/Outlast on bass. And yes the name is taken from ZELDA.

IE: What are ex-members Ray and Loki up to these days? Do you stay in touch?

Lenny: Ray is playing pool, smoking cigs and hitting on the young ladies. Loki is starting his own reptile collective.  Just kidding.... Ray actually came and played with us at This Is Hardcore on "Payback" and as he says, "Chillin". As for Loki, he is still playing music and raising a family.
