If you are like myself and were into the NYHC scene back in the late 1980's there is a good chance the cassette tape displayed above changed your musical life FOREVER. I love "The Age Of Quarrel" as much as the next guy and Murphys Law, Gorilla Biscuits, AF, and Token Entry were ALL a steady part of my hardcore diet growing up and even still are today BUT this is THE DEMO, hands down. Back in January of 1989 I was 19 years old, was working on the third issue of In Effect and went down to a CBGB matinee to check out some bands as was the custom. You just went because there was a show, it didn't matter who was playing. I would usually bring my tape recorder along just in case an interview chance would pop up. On the way over to CB's I mentioned to my friend Grandpa Nick that I was thinking about doing an interview with Breakdown. I had no questions set up in my head but I knew I could think of some if it came about but I wasn't counting on it. Alot of times at shows people from just about every band would be hanging out, it was just that they were surrounded by groups of friends, fans and people all grabbing at them to shoot the shit and it wasn't always the easiest thing to grab someone away to do an interview. Breakdown was in a state of rebuilding at the time after members Carl, Rich, and Drago left to start up Raw Deal and I knew just that subject matter could create a decent interview if I were to grab Jeff. Anyway, I am just hanging out in between bands and here comes Grandpa Nick with Jeff from Breakdown and basically goes "here is the Breakdown guy... get your recorder out" So with all that said here is the exact scan from In Effect #3 with an interview with Breakdown. Jeff is obviously all the replies with the "J" and good friend of the band Rep is represented with the "R". This interview was alot of fun and very funny and had some back stories as well. We were standing right next to the garbage dumpster outside CB's and had ALOT of interuptions including ones from homeless guys asking for money and ended up being part of the interview. For whatever reason I decided at the time to not include homeless guy answers and the tapes are long long gone so I apologize for that. Anyway... enjoy this walk back in time and keep in mind that Breakdown with their original lineup from this demo are now back and playing shows again. Check them out on Facebook:
